Orthopedic Surgeon David M. Sedory, MD, from Optim Orthopedics is now providing orthopedic services at Appling Healthcare in Baxley. A board certified and fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Sedory has been seeing patients at Optim’s Baxley office for the past several years. Optim Healthcare and Appling Healthcare System teamed up recently to offer patients expanded access to orthopedic care in the county.

From non-surgical solutions to minimally invasive and joint preserving surgery, Dr. Sedory provides treatment for a wide range of orthopedic conditions to include hip impingement, labral tears, cartilage injury, bursitis, tendon tears, hip arthritis and snapping hip.

While he believes that non-operative measures should be the first option in nearly all patients, Dr. Sedory employs a wide variety of surgical techniques to get his patients back to their desired activities when conservative measures fail. He is a specialist in arthroscopic surgery of the hip, knee, and shoulder. His practice focuses on joint and cartilage preservation surgeries including the treatment of hip impingement.

Dr. Sedory earned his medical degree in 2005 from the prestigious Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic internship and residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas, where he had the honor of taking care of many of our country’s injured soldiers and amputees returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 and then had the privilege of serving as team physician for the 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Airfield in Savannah. Most recently, Dr. Sedory served as Chief of Surgery at the Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart.

Did you know that one quarter of your body’s bones are in your feet?

And in addition to its 26 bones, your foot has 33 joints, 19 muscles and 107 ligaments that must work together when you walk. That’s why when you sprain an ankle or experience plantar fasciitis, the pain can be debilitating.

Because the foot is such an extremely complex area of our skeletal system, it’s important to see a specialist who has the highest levels of specialized training and advanced education.

So, foot & ankle orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist?

It’s important to know the differences, especially in their education levels (note: one has gone to medical school).

Let’s compare:

Foot & Ankle Orthopedic Surgeon

  • Undergraduate Degree
  • 5 Years Orthopedic Surgery Residency
  • 1 Year Foot & Ankle Fellowship Training
  • MD (Doctor of Medicine: They graduated from medical school.)

Podiatrist

  • Undergraduate Degree
  • 4 Years Podiatric School
  • 3 Years Surgical Residency
  • DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine: Podiatrists don’t go to medical school. They have their own schools and professional associations.)

At Optim Orthopedics, our foot & ankle orthopedic surgeons are Juha Jaakkola, MD, Christopher Nicholson, MD, and Jeffrey Goldberg, MD. All three have an in-depth knowledge of the entire musculoskeletal system (your bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints). They treat the whole foot and ankle both surgically and non-surgically.

Read a letter from our foot & ankle orthopedic surgeons about their advanced education and training.

From bunions and ingrown toenails to a stress fracture or ligament reconstruction, our foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons will work with you every step of the way to get you back on your feet as soon as possible. Make an appointment today!

Total Joint Coordinator Shares First-Hand Insight After Hip Surgery

$

0

When patients are having a hip or knee replacement at the Optim Surgery Center, they’re assigned a Total Joint Coordinator. This Registered Nurse works closely with patients, educating them on what to expect and helping facilitate care, from pre-op to discharge and then follow-up care.

When Ed Osterman was scheduled for his hip replacement, however, the Total Joint Coordinator was not available. That’s because Ed is the Total Joint Coordinator.

“From a nursing/educator’s position, it’s been quite beneficial for me to have gone through the entire process of pre-op struggles, having surgery and ultimately recovery,” said Ed, a Registered Nurse. “Now, when I talk to patients, I’m able to relate even better with them. I understand and know first-hand what they’re going through. When patients are informed and know what to expect, they gain more confidence and feel better all along the way.”

Ed’s surgeon for his hip replacement was Charles Hope, MD, one of the region’s most renowned total joint specialists. “When I became a nurse back in 2009, I started on the orthopedic floor at St. Joseph’s and that’s when I met Dr. Hope,” recalled Ed. “I got to know him and learned to appreciate his qualities as a surgeon. He’s very detail oriented and totally focused on his game plan. I decided back then that, if I ever needed a joint replaced, I would use Dr. Hope.  However, what I’ve learned since then is that all of the surgeons at Optim are pretty amazing, but my decision had already been made.”

When choosing his surgeon, Ed also relied on the first-hand experiences of his family, since Dr. Hope has replaced a total of 7 joints on his wife’s side.

For Ed, the pain in his hip got progressively worse over the latter part of 2018, so he made the decision to talk to Dr. Hope. “As Dr. Hope put it, my hip had ‘too many miles and too many years,’” said Ed. “I knew the problem was not going away and that it was only going to get worse.  By the time I had surgery, I was really struggling to get around.  To move meant pain, and it had gotten pretty bad.  It had become quite debilitating.   Hip pain, as with any other type of joint pain, can really affect your quality of life in a negative way. I knew it was time.”

His total hip replacement surgery took place on the 31st of December in 2018 at the Optim Surgery Center, a beautiful facility in Savannah that is solely focused on orthopedic procedures. For patients like Ed, choosing Optim’s ambulatory surgery center was about more than its high-end finishes and premium recovery suites. In 2018, Optim’s highly specialized physicians performed more than 7,500 medical procedures in the facility, which continually boasts an excellent safety record and a low risk of infection.

And even though Ed already knew all of the staff members, his surgery enabled him to witness firsthand their above-and-beyond quality of care. “The staff is not only very nice, but also very competent, showing so much great attention to you as a patient,” he said. “I understand why patients love coming here. The attention you get as far as nurse-to-patient ratio is wonderful. They go above and beyond to make everyone feel important and special.”

Total Joint Coordinator Ed Osterman with Registered Nurse Kyra Mohr, one of the staff members who took great care of Ed when he had hip replacement surgery in December 2018.

After the hip replacement surgery, which Dr. Hope performed using the anterior approach, Ed began his journey of recovery. “It was actually easy compared to the pain I felt before I had the surgery,” he said. “Even though I had witnessed and heard the story over and over from the many patients that had come through and had a joint replaced, I was still amazed at how quickly I was back on my feet walking around with little discomfort.  For the first couple of weeks I just moved around the house and took short walks outside, and then I started easing myself into doing exercises to help strengthen the muscles.  Dr. Hope had told me that he didn’t want me doing much more than that for the first couple of weeks.”

Now, months later, Ed enjoys living a “normal life” as he calls it. “Before, I couldn’t take a step without hip pain,” he explained. “Now I can bend over without pain and I can actually tie my shoes again.”

As a Total Joint Coordinator, Ed cautions patients to not overdo it in the beginning. “Most patients feel so much better immediately following hip replacement surgery (compared to before surgery) that they want to take off and get right into exercising and right back to a normal life,” said Ed. “Just remember, there is a healing process and it takes time.  To much too soon can lead to increased swelling and pain.  My motto is, ‘I don’t care how good you feel, you still have to heal’.”

As a joint replacement patient, Ed advises patients undergoing surgery to relax. “All of the Optim surgeons are highly skilled with many years of experience doing orthopedic surgeries,” he explained. “Trust the surgeons, trust the process, trust the staff. You’ll be fine.”

Trainer Hope Price Featured in ‘Statesboro Moments Magazine

Hope Price is an Athletic Trainer at Statesboro High School for Optim Sports Medicine.

Story by Julie Lavender / Photos by Scott Bryant

Moments cover mom Hope Stalcup Price, mom of two adopted daughters, is the first to admit that not everyone is called to adopt. But she’s quick to point out that there’s always a way to help with adoption.

‘We’re all called to help widows and orphans,’ she said. ‘There’s always a way to be part of the process — either by personally adopting, sharing a file on Facebook, or helping out a family who has adopted.’

With the adoptions of Chandler and Harper, Hope and husband Evan Price have experienced the process domestically and internationally — and both had their challenges and rewards.

The Statesboro High School sweethearts married during their senior year of college, in 2010. Hope was obtaining an athletic training degree from Georgia Southern, and Evan’s degree was in human resources. After graduation, the couple left Statesboro briefly for Hope to complete her master’s degree in exercise science.

Currently, Hope is an athletic trainer at Statesboro High School, and Evan is a solution sales specialist with Fastenal.

Thoughts of starting a family didn’t go as expected for the Prices.

‘I had two miscarriages in 2012 and 2013, and we struggled with infertility,’ Hope said.

Doctors told her she had less than a 3% chance of getting pregnant. She said she remembers praying, ‘God, if this is not your plan for us, show us what you want us to do.’

Once the Prices decided to adopt, the process took two years, with paperwork and background checks and interviews and home visits. It was a long process, but then when it happened, it happened quickly.

‘We got a phone call on Monday, and we picked her up on Wednesday,’ Hope said.

The domestic adoption that brought Chandler Grace into their home in 2015 took place after the birth mother chose the Prices from a selection of files.

‘Her birth mother decided we could name her,’ Hope said.

The Prices have what’s called a ‘semi-open adoption’ and send letters and pictures to Chandler’s birth mom regularly.

‘We’ve been very open with Chandler about the adoption,’ Hope said. ‘We let her pick out the pictures to send, and we read to her what we’re writing.’

A couple of years later, when the Prices contemplated another adoption, they first assumed they’d adopt domestically again, just as a matter of familiarity.

‘I’d started following Reece’s Rainbow, an advocacy group for special needs adoptions, because we have friends who adopted their daughter internationally with help from that group. I was lying in bed one night, looking online at files, and said to Evan, ‘What if we go a different route? What if we go international?” She said that would mean even more extensive paperwork, as well as a more expensive process.

‘We went back and forth for a while, praying about

what to do,’ she said. ‘Then, when we saw Harper’s picture, we felt like God was saying, ‘This is what I’m showing you to do.” Hope said that children on international adoption sites are often given American names.

‘When we saw that her name was Harper Grace — the same middle name as Chandler’s — we felt like it was a sign that she was meant to be ours.’

Again, the process took about two years. Hope said getting on the plane to make the trek to China was probably the most terrifying thing she’d ever done.

With both adoptions, Hope said they were stepping out in faith, knowing that God would lead them and provide for them when there were challenges. But an international, special-needs adoption brought even more questions.

‘I kept asking God, ‘Are you sure you chose the right parents? I don’t know if I’m equipped for this.” The Prices knew from the beginning that they were adopting a daughter with Down syndrome.

‘Harper has some obvious delays and challenges that come along with Down syndrome,’ Hope said. ‘One of the biggest is her language and communication, but since being home and having time with therapists, we have seen huge strides in this area.

‘We’re also still navigating through bonding and affection, since institutionalized children have a hard time with that once home. We help her with this by ensuring that it is on her terms, and we don’t push it.’

Hope said that Harper adjusted faster and easier than the rest of the family, and this December marks one year that she’s been in the United States. For the most part, Harper’s laid-back personality has helped her adjust to her new life and family, but Hope said she did get a little anxious when the family moved to a new house across town over the summer.

Both girls are students in the pre-K program at Mattie Lively Elementary School, and Harper receives therapy time during her school day.

‘The therapists are absolutely amazing,’ Hope said. ‘Our families and friends are a huge support to us as well and couldn’t love Harper more.’

The Prices are blessed to have both sets of grandparents living in Statesboro.

Harper loves being outside, anything to do with music and following her sister, Hope said.

‘The only things we really try to avoid are extremely crowded situations or things where she has to walk a lot, since Down syndrome causes low muscle tone and she tires easily.’

Hope said the girls get along great most of the time, but one day recently, the nine-month-apart siblings had several disagreements.

‘They were having a rough day together, and 4-year-old Chandler asked, ‘When is Harper going back to China?’ and I reminded her that she wasn’t going back to China, that she was part of our family now forever.’

Sometimes the adoption process is a lot for a little one to take in.

‘Chandler asks occasionally, ‘Why is my skin brown and yours and Daddy’s skin is white?” Hope said that she and her husband make extra efforts to explain the process in a positive and loving way.

‘Adoption can sometimes have a negative connotation for some, especially for the birth mother,’ she said. ‘We want them

to know that, yes, we’re mommy and daddy, but that they have another family that chose to give them life and wanted better for them.

‘We try to share their birth story without tainting their view of their birth family.’

There have been challenges and changes but blessings galore for the Price little girls — and perhaps the biggest change for the sisters? They’re getting a baby brother!

‘In February, I started feeling bad, like I had the flu,’ Hope said.

Eventually going to the doctor, Hope found out she was nine weeks pregnant. With a smile, she said she’s not sure if the girls understand just exactly how their world is about to change.

Through it all, Hope and Evan have maintained a strong faith in God’s plan for their lives. Now, the beautiful family of four — soon to be five — is excited to watch God’s plans unfold for the next part of their journey.

‘Adoption can sometimes have a negative connotation for some, especially for the birth mother. We want (the girls) to know that, yes, we’re mommy and daddy, but that they have another family that chose to give them life and wanted better for them.’ –Hope Price, mother of two adopted daughters

Patient Story: An Emotional Journey for Rheumatoid Arthritis Patient

I cannot say enough kind words about someone who I feel has basically given me my life back.”

Debra Stephens, Patient of Juha Jaakkola, md

Debra Stephens can’t help but get emotional when talking about her foot surgery and especially her surgeon. Since 1996, she’s been suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis throughout her body. In her feet, the pain has been severe. On April 26, 2019, Juha Jaakkola, MD, from Optim Orthopedics performed forefoot reconstruction on her left foot and Debra is thrilled with the results. “I cried when I first saw my foot after surgery,” she said. “It was my old foot again!”

Debra admits she was nervous about her first visit to Dr. Jaakkola. “I was scared, but I knew something had to be done,” she said. “Dr. Jaakkola made me feel very comfortable. He looked at the x-rays and said, ‘I can fix that.’ He then went on to explain everything about the planned foot reconstruction in great detail.”

The procedure was performed at the Optim Surgery Center in Savannah. “Everyone over there  was extremely pleasant and professional,” said Debra. “I just can’t say enough nice things about all the nurses and staff. Each person told me who they were, what they were going to do and what to expect. They were so gracious.”

According to Debra, she felt immediate relief from the surgery even though the first few days of recovery were painful.

She also knows for a fact that going ahead with the surgery and choosing Dr. Jaakkola at Optim Orthopedics was the best decision. “Since then, so many people have told me that they know he’s one of the best around,” said Debra. “And when I would go out with the recovery boot on, people would ask me what happened to my foot. I’m not a very talkative person, but I didn’t at all mind sharing that Dr. Jaakkola was my doctor and recommending him.”

Without a doubt, Debra knows that the procedure changed her life. The pain had gotten progressively worse over the years and kept her from being able to do everyday things like grocery shopping or some household tasks. Debra’s loving husband of 33 years, David, has been by her side every step of the way. “I wouldn’t have been able to go through this without him,” she said. “He’s done an awful lot, helping around the house and going to all of my appointments with me.”

David & Debra Stephens

For now, Debra is focusing on staying positive “My mother had rheumatoid arthritis severely and actually died at the age of 59,” she said. “I turned 59 this past January, so it was an issue that had really been weighing on me. I didn’t choose to have this disease but I can choose how to handle it.”

Debra enjoys spending time with her husband, their three children and three (soon to be four) young grandchildren. Their son, Greg, and his wife, Dana, have a daughter, Evelyn, and are expecting a son in November. Their other son, Brad, and his wife, Cody, are the parents of Dash and Ari. Daughter Emily recently became engaged to Will Cecil.

Debra’s next surgery by Dr. Jaakkola will take place in the next month or two, this time the reconstruction of her right foot. She thinks back to her first appointment with Dr. Jaakkola, when he shared something with her that he had learned in medical school. “He said he was told that when the procedure is successful, your Rheumatoid Arthritis patients will be the most grateful patients. For my part, I cannot say enough kind words about someone who I feel has basically given me my life back.”

SUSTAINED CLINICAL EXCELLENCE AND QUALILTY CARE: OPTIM MEDICAL CENTER-TATTNALL NAMED AMERICA’S 100 BEST HOSPITALS FOR JOINT REPLACEMENT FOR THE SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Other Clinical Achievements Include Five-Star Recipient for Total Knee Replacement, Total Hip Replacement, and Spinal Fusion Surgery

For the seventh consecutive year Optim Medical Center-Tattnall is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacementfor 2020 according to a national study by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.

In addition, Optim Medical Center-Tattnall was recognized by Healthgrades for the following clinical achievements:

  • Five-Star Recipient for Total Knee Replacement for 9 Years in a Row (2012-2020)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Total Hip Replacement for 7 Years in a Row (2014-2020)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Spinal Fusion Surgery for 5 Years in a Row (2016-2020)

One of only two hospitals in the state of Georgia to receive the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement, Optim Medical Center-Tattnall is the only hospital in the entire state to earn all of these distinctions year after year.

“Earning these ratings year after year reflects our singular attention to the high-quality, patient-focused care that drives everything we do, in every department, each and every day,” said Don G. Aaron, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Optim Medical Center-Tattnall. “These ratings are based on our clinical results and are an extremely meaningful difference in clinical outcomes for our patients.”

Determining America’s Best Hospital

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records over a three-year period from 2016-2018 for nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance.

Based on Healthgrades findings, patients treated at an America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement have, on average, a 62.5% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

“Consumers have many choices when it comes to choosing a hospital where to receive care and the choice can be a matter of life and death,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement recognizes those hospitals that have proven their dedication to quality care and exceptional outcomes over time and we applaud their efforts and achievement.”

A Team Effort

Optim Medical Center-Tattnall, along with the orthopedic and neurosurgery doctors who work there, are proud to consistently receive national recognition for their orthopedic and spine outcomes. They are equally as proud of the team of dedicated women and men who help to achieve these awards and celebrate the efforts of each and every caregiver and employee that plays an important role in making Optim Medical Center-Tattnall’s care exceptional.

Optim Medical Center-Tattnall’s partnerships with Optim Orthopedics, Spivey Orthopedic Clinics, and others notable practices focused on orthopedic and musculoskeletal care also plays a key role in these superior patient outcomes.

“These achievements are a tremendous benefit to our patients and the bottom line is, quality does matter,” Rob Snipes, CEO of Optim Medical Center-Tattnall. “This recognition of the exceptional care Optim Medical Center-Tattnall delivers is a testament to our expertise and the continuous pursuit of excellence that our team of caregivers demonstrate day in, day out.”

Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2016 through 2018 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.

Continuing to provide compassionate, high quality care remains our mission as we stay on top of updates and recommendations from the CDC and the Georgia and South Carolina Departments of Public Health.

We know you have questions and are hopeful we can provide some answers and peace of mind.

HEIGHTENED PRECAUTIONS

During this heightened flu season and with the rapid advancement of coronavirus, it is imperative that we do everything we can to avoid the potential spread of any communicable diseases or respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19.

As part of our safety protocols, all patients and visitors will be required to fill out a questionnaire (online and/or in-person) based on CDC guidelines. A list of the screening questions may be downloaded here.

Where available, we are offering mobile check-in (Optim Orthopedics clinics) and wait in your car instead of the lobby options. Additionally, at some Optim Health System Primary Care clinics we are offering telemedicine options.

Please DO NOT visit nor accompany a patient if you or someone you are in close contact with:

  • Has a fever
  • Has a cough, shortness of breath, or other flu-like or coronavirus-like symptoms
  • Has been on a cruise ship, traveled outside of the country, or traveled anywhere in the US that has confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases

Optim Primary Care takes a patient focused approach at all times, but we are even more focused on you, our patients, during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak.

We are screening everyone at the front door before they enter the building for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. Most patients will go immediately to an exam room with no wait in the waiting room. Both Primary Clinics in Sylvania are also offering a paging system (restaurant style pager which buzzes and flashes) if there is a wait so patients can wait in their vehicles or newly added outdoor seating instead of the waiting room if they prefer.

We are also offering telemedicine appointments at all our Primary Care clinics which are HIPAA compliant, secure face-to-face video (FaceTime/Skype) appointments with your provider.

TELEMEDICINE

Patients with a telemedicine visit will receive an email with a link to click and a code to enter for a FaceTime/Skype-type face-to-face, interactive appointment with your provider. Please use the Google Chrome web browser for telemedicine via the URL (shown below) or the patient portal. There is also a patient portal app, myHealthspot, that you may download and use.

COVID-19 SYMPTOM EVALUATION

Patient’s calling in with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 can be evaluated via telemedicine. If you prefer to be seen in person, PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE FIRST so we may be properly prepared as we can now swab a patient for influenza or strep throat and provide treatment right from your car!

If you meet the criteria for COVID-19 testing, you will be referred to a testing center. You will be given a reference number for testing via the Department of Public Health, you must bring this with you to the testing site.
